EXERCISE Num.# 1

INDICATING A HIDDEN PERSON BY
SCENT OR SOUND

The evaluator, considering scent conditions and wind directions, tells the suspect to hide up wind from the patrol route.  At this time the dog and handler are out of sight.
The handler alerts his dog and goes on patrol. The leash is in the handler's left hand and pulled in short.

As soon as the dog picks up the person's body scent or, hears a natural noise, he must indicate this to it's handler.

Searching the ground is faulty and is not tolerated. When the dog indicates a person, the handler must quickly find cover, kneel and wait a short while Then the Handler must give his departmental warning in the indicated direction.

When the dog locates the person, it must guard and bark.

As soon as dog starts barking, the handler then approaches in a tactical manner at about 10 yards from where the person is being guarded. Depending on the situation, the handler leaves the dog on a down or calls the person out of his hiding place. The suspect is then placed under arrest and is searched by the handler; while the dog guards intensely.

Escape Prevention:
The person suddenly flees along the patrol route while being escorted. The dog must remain heeling, and when the suspect is about 30 yards away, the handler commands his dog to pursue by voice.

The dog must run as fast as possible to catch up with the person and must keep him form fleeing any further by fighting him. The handler follows immediately and from a distance of about (10) yards, when the suspect has stopped resisting, the handler orders his dog to release and downs the dog. The person is then escorted to the evaluator to be remanded.
